Pwll Du, Welsh for ‘Black Pool’, Gower
‘Black pool’ refers to the shingle bank which blocks the flow of the river into the bay, thus forming a pool.
Pwll Du has been used over the centuries for both smuggling liquor and quarrying limestone, the latter which was transported by ship to Devon and used to make agricultural lime. Both the workers and smugglers made use of the five pubs that once nestled at the head of the bay. Two of the buildings remain today, as pictured.
