Star trails rotating around the North Star,
above Mount Toubkal, Atlas Mountains, Morocco

The peak of Toubkal is approximately in the centre of the image - it is the peak on the right of the two peaks in the distance. The landscape part of the image is a 120 second exposure taken at 8pm, almost two hours after sunset, and lit by the moon.
The celestial part of the image, showing the star trails, was made on the previous night near Tizi n'Test Pass in Morocco (about 35 miles from Toubkal). It has been superimposed over the landscape to create the final image.
The star trails show the natural rotation of the stars around the North Star over a period of six hours; i.e. it shows one quarter of the daily rotation of the stars. The stars' apparent rotation is an effect of the earth spinning on her axis, which she does once every 24 hours. The earth's axis is currently almost exactly aligned with what we call the North Star, which therefore has the appearance of remaining stationary in the sky.
